Social Annotation has a new name - Diigo
Another social Annotation site has come into being. Diigo launched on Monday, as it had promised, after being in closed beta testing for a quite a while. Diigo is actually an abbreviation for 'Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff,” and not another imitation or a “wannabe web 2.0” name.
The new service aims to work at being a better bookmarking tool and for me, personally, it was very user-friendly. I loved it right from the start. To start bookmarking, per say, one can choose between between the Diigo toolbar, which works with IE, Firefox or Flock, and a conventional bookmarklet called the “Diigolet” (no Flock version yet).
Diigo's "Social Annotation" service seamlessly integrates Social Bookmarking, Web Highlighter, Sticky-Note & Clipping to make it a powerful tool for online research, collaboration and information management and discovery.
I loved the the Diigo toolbar because it allowed ease and realism while you go about bookmarking. Also, they have a ton of non-puerile new features, which really make a lot of sense – seriously del.icio.us with brains. You can use many of these tools to highlight specific content on a webpage, bookmark it, or send the selected text to your blog.
The Highlight & Clip Pictures feature is also neat. Highlighting and clipping pictures are now treated almost the same as text that means you can now highlight and clip texts and pictures together. You can also add sticky notes to highlighted pictures.
Great future:
Ok, now here’s the real deal. Diigo is a great service that’s loaded to its nose with features that many would love. And I think that there’s a large audience out there who would love to love Diigo, just because it’s so easy to use. Yes, there will still be the del.icio.us fanatics, but everyone have their own preferences.
Right now, it seems like del.icio.us and other established players still have the upper hand with more users (and counting!) flocking to their sites. Can Diigo take the competition to them, or will the competition get to them? Actual user testimonials on Diigo.com attest to Diigo’s potential as an online book marking force to reckon with. We wish them the best!
