No this is not another IE bashing, Opera hating post, but this post is rather about Firefox and why it is so good. Your views are most welcome so feel absolutely free to post on, but let’s not get into a silly browser war!

Well, I’ve been using Firefox for quite a few years by now. I must confess, I was and the still am to a certain extent, a big Maxthon fan (Maxthon uses IE engine). The only reason why I gave up Maxthon for Firefox is because Firefox is the only browser that can actually grow with you.

Let me explain, Firefox gets one thing right, that it is a great browser without any frills. It’s simple; it’s straight forward and doesn’t bog you down. You want a feature, sure use an extension. You want to change the way a shortcut key performs, get keyconfig it’ll let you remap every key possible in Firefox. That’s how wild it is. No other browser on the planet, neither IE, nor Opera, nor Netscape let you do this. All other browsers have an agenda and the agenda is not you. They aren’t centralized on what matters most—the dudes using the browser, the users themselves. Of course I don’t expect every browser/company to go the same way, that would probably be a disaster, but from a user’s perspective, you cannot get anything better than Firefox.

So what extensions do you use to make Firefox grow to your likes and dislikes?

Here’s my small list…

Tab Mix Plus – This is by far the best extension to really add more oomph to your browser. Feel the need to move the 10th tab next to the one you are reading so that you can club two similar tabs together or want to open new tabs next to adjacent ones, this extension is what you need. I dare say to make Firefox a little more Maxthon like--perhaps, hehe old habits die hard.

MR Tech Local Install – This is the BEST extension manager that I’ve ever used and a definite recommend. If you have over 20 extensions installed (like I have), this is dude you need in the list.

Fasterfox – Does exactly what it says, makes Firefox faster by speeding up its performance over the internet. Simple and very configurable.

Customize Google Perfect for Google fans, particularly helps me when searching for images in “Google Images” by directly linking to the images rather than to the webpage that contains the image. Besides I use this to query in multiple search engines if our dear Google doesn’t have what I need.

Search Engine Ordering – The ‘Holy Grail’ when it comes to sorting out multiple search engines in the Firefox search toolbar, just drag and move the search engines around to set them in the order that you want.

And last but not least…
Keyconfig – My savior when it comes to key mapping to my liking. I’m so used to [Ctrl+N] as a new Tab rather than a new Window, yes I know I’m such a bitch. This habit was formed due to Maxthon and I certainly don’t want to change it.

Well that’s about it for now from me, will post more extensions later. Don’t forget to add you own, there are several that I haven’t tried and would love to!

Edit: Just added direct links to download extensions

Customize Google I liked and I tried to use but it was giving me major problems. Stuff like typing in the search box on the google page with the extension turned on would do *really* weird stuff because of the Google suggest integration. Maybe it's improved with a new version; I'd given up on it.

I'd like to suggest some more plugins:

Greasemonkey: Let's you run greasemonkey scripts. An essential.

Down Them all: A beautiful thing. It replaces every download manager and resides totally in Firefox.

I'm currently trying out the Video Downloader extension. It looks promising. Will report on it shortly.

-Dhiraj.

Edit: Put in links for the extensions I suggested.

I just put in the links to addons.mozilla.org for the extensions that I suggested. Perhaps you could to the same for your list, Nik?

It'll be a bigger help for the people who're lurking on this forum and not putting in their recommendations/thoughts.

Some more extensions:

Extended Statusbar: A Statusbar with Speed, Percentage, Time and loaded size (like Opera's)

Functions for keyconfig: Adds a lot of extra functions (like Previous and Next tab) for the keyconfig extension that Nik suggested.

Scrapbook: Let's you save snippets and even entire Web pages and easily manage collections of these. Lightning fast and extremely useful. Beats Google Notebook's "Note this"  functionality to bits!

Hello everyone

It seems this is going to turn out to be the most comprehensive firefox extension list!

I have recently started using Firefox and i am completely floored by the amazing funtionality that it provides to the user. Here is my contribution to the list.

Sage: A lightweight RSS & Atom feed aggregator which integrates with Firfox's bookmark storage and Live Bookmarks

Adsense Notifier: Displays your Adsense earnings on the statusbar. (Now you know your earnings by the minute.)

Restart Firfox: Adds "Restart Firefox" as a menu item to "File" and a toolbar button for restarting easily. It's a great utility especially coz a lot of the extentions, themes etc need you to restart firefox.

Btw Romasha, you dont need to use Restart Firefox if you are using Tab Mix plus as this functionality is already in built...or was it Mr Tech Local Install??

Oh well try them both, I've posted links in my original post if you need to download.

If you have all of the above then disable the Restart Firefox extension and start firefox again, you should still see "Restart Firefox Ctrl + Alt+ R" in the "File Menu" right above the "Exit". Lemme know if this works!

i'm sooo glad we had this topic put up here. I have been wanting to have a few extensions incorporated into my firefox browser to give me optimal performance. . . but, i could never really figure out which ones to single out and use. I love you guys!! I can finally make a decision to incorporate a few of the mentioned extensions.

You need to be DISTINCTIVE, GORGEOUS and a little SINISTER to get to the top of the ladder you have chosen to climb

Firefox is one browser that totally rocks. And I love Dhiraj’s sound advice in his article- 5 Firefox extensions you can't live without. What really blew me off when I officially “switched over” from explorer to Firefox .Was the fact that I could actually view multiple windows within the same Firefox browser interface. Instead of handling multiple IE windows that pile on top of each other in the taskbar. With all of these extensions neatly packed in my Firefox browser, I can make it work the way I want it to. Firefox is fast and it has enhanced both my work and knowledge about the Web considerably. Cheers to you guys at NB! Keep dishin’ out the good stuff.
